It's nearly the end of summer. You'll say goodbye to the beach days, the swimming pools, the flip-flops and the sun cream shortly. Soon you'll be returning to school. Think of the start of each school year like a new beginning. It's a good opportunity to get started on the right foot.

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday in the United States and Canada (among other countries). Historically, Thanksgiving was intended to give thanks to God for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. Thanksgiving has its historical roots in religious and cultural traditions and has long been celebrated in a secular manner as well. In the U.S., Thanksgiving is celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November (Canada celebrates it on the second Monday in October)
Eating plays a large role in the celebration of Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving Day, families and friends usually gather for a large meal including turkey. Major American cities have parades, the most famous being New York's Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.
American football is also a major part of Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. Professional games are traditionally played on Thanksgiving Day.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated around the world on March 8. It began at the turn of the 20th century as a campaign for better working conditions by women in New York. Millions of women celebrate their rights and freedoms on this day! All around the world women are becoming more powerful in business, politics and other areas. There are over a dozen nations today with women leaders. However, IWD is still necessary to highlight the inequalities that many women still face.

St Valentine's Day is celebrated every year on 14 February. It's the day when people show their affection for another person by sending cards, flowers or chocolate with messages of love.
In the UK, a massive amount of money is spent on what some say is the most romantic day of the year: 22 million spent on flowers, 7 million red roses and 12 million cards are sent.
So, have a happy Valentine's Day but remember: don't feel left out if you don't get a card - it's giving that counts!

Dictionary Day is in honour of Noah Webster, considered the father of the modern dictionary. It is a date for us all to get out our dictionaries and start using them more often. We all need dictionaries. Many people have paper dictionaries and others use online ones on their computers or mobile phones.

The school year is over and summer is here and our holidays too. Now it's time to take a break, relax and have fun with our friends and families. ST. GEORGE'S DAY
According to a legend, Saint George killed a dragon and saved the lives of many people.
On St. George's Day some people in England wear a red rose or put an English flag in their window.

MARCH 2013
March is named after Mars who was the Roman god of War and protector of growing crops. Although it is the third month of our year, it used to be the first month in the old Roman calendar. It was the first month in Britain until 1752.
Every year on March 8th, International Women's Day is celebrated by millions of women throughout the world. Watch this interesting video in honor of this celebration.
Halloween is celebrated on October 31st every year. Today, it is more of a fun day for children and has largely lost its religious roots. Halloween has many symbols. In particular, orange pumpkins and fires and black witches, cats and costumes are common of this day.Trick-or-treating is one of the biggest Halloween activities. Children knock on doors and ask for a small gift. If they don´t get anything, they'll play a trick on the peson who opens the door.

October was originally the eighth month of the Roman calendar and the name comes from the Latin octo meaning eight.

The Day of the Valencian Community is a local public holiday in Valencia. It celebrates Valencian culture and history. It marks the anniversary of King James of Aragon's capture of the city of Valencia from Moorish forces in 1238. After more than five centuries of Islamic rule, James I of Aragon created the kingdom of Valencia. Today the Valencian Community is an autonomous community divided into three provinces: Alicante, Castellón and Valencia.

I hope you had a great summer with your family and friends but now summer is about to finish. Days are getting shorter. Weather is slowly beginning to change. And school is back again.
I hope you are full of energy to start the new school year 2012-2013.
Today I just want to say hello to all of you and say welcome back.

SUMMER RECOMMENDATIONS
Dear Students:
Time has really flown and, yes, it’s summertime and we are all on holiday. Summer is the time to relax. But you don’t want your English to disappear. What can you do to keep up with your English? Here are some relaxing ways to study English in the summer:
- Watching TV or films is a great way to learn English. Keep the subtitles on and watch all the episodes of your favourite show.
- Remember it is very important to read during summer. Go to the bookshop and choose a really easy English book. I’ve posted a list of different texts for you to read. They are in ESO 3 page. I hope you like them! You also have a link to the PAU
- Listen to music in English. You can find the lyrics of your favourite songs in the Internet.
- Remember that in this blog there are a lot of worksheets you can download, print and work with. Most of them have the answer key included.
- I remind you that in this site you have got a page called Useful Links where you can find a great collection of resources that will help you improve your English.
